A Rare Treat

So far we have counted over 35 different kinds of birds in our yard, all within ten yards of the house. Watching the Hairy Woodpeckers taking care of their young has been the highlight of the spring so far.

Rose-Breasted Grosbeak - Pheucitius ludovicianus

Wood Thrush -- Hylocichla mustelina

Indigo Bunting -- Passerina cyanea

Rose-Breasted Nuthatch - Sitta canadensis

Black-Capped Chickadee

White-Breasted Nuthatch -- Sitta carolinensis

Bluejay -- Cyanocitta cristata

Male Hairy Woodpecker

Male and female Hairy Woodpecker -- Dendrocopos villosus.
This is their nest in an old locust tree. The male is sitting on the tree, the female is in flight.
