Art 115 Photography

Last Tuesday I started to audit the photography class held at Saint Francis University. Although three of this week's 27 photographs were shot for the newspaper all were done with the class assignment in mind. All of these images deal with a list of 49 potential themes that will be used through out the semester as compiled by our instructor, Mr. Chuck Olson of the University's Fine Arts Department. All of the photographs will include some of the technical information as to how the photographs were done. Most of the photographs could fall under several different categories but for expediency we are only going to use one.

Candid -- My Grand Niece
Shutter speed -- 1/40 ; Aperture -- f2.8 ; ISO -- 200 ; Focal Length -- 70 mm

Geometry -- A Basketball Mistake
I got this image because I inadvertently moved my mode dial on the camera off of manual.
Shutter speed -- 1/4 ; Aperture -- f8.0 ; ISO -- 1600 ; Focal length -- 30 mm

Animal -- Burro
What drew me to this picture was the fact that the borro was standing in the field all by itself and the red harness was a point of contrast.
Shutter speed -- 1/500 ; Aperture -- f4.0 ; ISO -- 400 ; Focal length -- 200 mm

Mechanical -- Control Panel
Shutter speed -- 1/30 ; Aperture -- f2.5 ; ISO -- 400 ; Focal length -- 30 mm ; Hand held

Color -- Fire Truck in Red
Shutter speed -- 1/25 ; Aperture -- f2.8 ; ISO -- 400 ; Focal length -- 24 mm ; Hand held

Trees -- Dead wood
Shot along Route 36 near Westover, PA.
Shutter speed -- 1/640 ; Aperture -- f4.5 ; ISO -- 400 ; Focal length -- 43 mm

Figure -- Horse Face
This photograph was achieved through PhotoShop. I first turned the picture into a black and white by desaturation of the color. I then used a process called posters edges.
Shutter speed -- 1/80 ; Aperture -- f9.0 ; ISO -- 200 ; Focal length --70 mm

Interior -- Lamp on Table
Shot of a store window display at the Emporium and Antique Shop in Ebensburg, PA.
Shutter speed -- 1/80 ; Aperture -- f2.8 ; ISO -- 800 ; Focal length -- 34 mm

Figure in an Environment -- Shirley
Shirley and her husband, Ed, were picking up trash along Number 9 Road in Susquehanna Township. I snapped this picture of Shirley as she was headed back to her home on this old dirt road.
Shutter speed -- 1/160 ; Aperture -- f4.0 ; ISO -- 200 ; Focal length -- 90 mm

Flag -- Faded Glory
The old shed shown here is on Route 36 North just past Five Points.
Shutter speed -- 1/125 ; Aperture -- f10 ; ISO -- 400 ; Focal length -- 25 mm

Rural Environment -- Mount Joy Church, Harmony, PA
Shutter speed -- 1/125 ; Aperture -- f16 ; ISO -- 400 ; Focal length -- 24 mm

Black and White -- Glass in Color
The effect is achieved by first desaturating the original color and going back in with a history brush and painting in the color that is shown in the lower left side of the window. The painted in section is actually the stained glass window on the opposite side of the building.
Shutter speed -- 1/125 ; Aperture -- f16 ; ISO -- 400 ; Focal length -- 35 mm

Architectural Structure -- Side Door
This is the third photograph of the Mount Joy Church that I shot.
Shutter speed -- 1/100 ; Aperture -- f16 ; ISO -- 400 ; Focal length -- 32 mm

Closeup -- Rusted Lock
I found this shot on an old garage located on Five Points Road.
Shutter speed -- 1/80 ; Aperture -- f22 ; ISO -- 400 ; Focal length -- 59 mm

Time of Day -- Patton Sheetz
There are several different aspects to this photograph. First I desaturated the original picture. Then I added a cooling filter which achieved the blue effect to the photograph. I then went back using the history brush and painted in just the canopy.
Shutter speed -- 1/30 ; Aperture -- f2.8 ; ISO -- 400 ; Focal length -- 70 mm

Evening -- Patton Sheetz in Color
This is the same point of view as the above photograph, but shot at a wider angle of view.
Shutter speed -- 1/50 ; Aperture -- f2.8 ; ISO -- 400 ; Focal length -- 32 mm

Winter -- A Winter Sky
Looking East off of our deck in the mid-afternoon sun. Living in the woods as we do this is our only view of an open sky.
Shutter speed -- 1/100 ; Aperture -- f8.0 ; ISO -- 100 ; Focal length --30 mm

Women -- Future Firefighter
An unposed portrait of a future firefighter for the Hope Fire Company, Northern Cambria, PA.
Shutter speed -- 1/500 ; Aperture -- f2.8 ; ISO -- 200 ; Focal length -- 165 mm

Working -- Mara
Got this shot when we were answering a call in Hastings to smoke in a building.
Shutter speed -- 1/15 ; Aperture -- f2.8 ; ISO -- 400 ; Focal length -- 40 mm ; Hand held

Animal -- Rooster
This is a sex linked chicken which means the males chicks have a colored spot on their heads so you can ID the roosters more easily. They are a cross between Barred Rock and Rhode Island Reds.
Shutter speed -- 1/400 ; Aperture -- f2.8 ; ISO -- 400 ; Focal length -- 70 mm

Point of View -- SR3001
Standing in the middle of the road, for a change, and not shooting through the windshield. The Mount Joy Church in some of the previous photographs is just to my right.
Shutter speed -- 1/160 ; Aperture -- f16 ; ISO -- 400 ; Focal length -- 54 mm

The Other -- Fire School
Shot at the Cambria County Firemen's Association Fire School, Cambria County, PA during an Essentials of Fire Fighting class.
Shutter speed -- 1/125 ; Aperture -- f8 ; ISO -- 400 ; Focal length -- 35 mm

Abstract -- Essence of Fire
Pictured here is a fuel oil fire which was part of the Essence of Fire Fighting training class.
Shutter speed -- 1/4000 ; Aperture -- f2.8 ; ISO -- 200 ; Focal length -- 200 mm

The next four pictures are all sports related and can fall under any number of categories that we have for the class assignment. They are also part of photographs that were printed in this week's edition of the Star Courier, the local weekly newspaper.
