From Bakerton to Birds

I'm not exactly sure what this building is but it kind of looks like an old jail, to me. 21Mar05 -- Thanks to Kerri and Herman, we've been informed that we misidentified this building. It was the Barnes and Tucker Coal Company company store.

This is a row of what is known around here as "company houses" in Bakerton, PA. They were owned by the coal company and "rented" to the miners.

"Go Steelers"

Part of an old coal mine.

The last time this mine was in production, they mined and sold what was called "house coal".

An old railroad crossing sign.

This picture, believe it or not, shows a stairway.

Undercarrriage of an old coal car.

Bakerton United Methodist Church.

Tufted-Titmouse

Nuthatch.

Black-Capped Chikadees.

Several weeks ago, I came up with a picture of a one-legged Gold Finch. This week I found me a tailless Black-Capped Chicadee. I wonder if it's the water around here?

Greg, I grew up in Bakerton and know exactly where most of your photos were taken. In fact, I was "brought up" in the Methodist Church and lived beside it. Really enjoyed seeing your work.

Greg,

Thank you so much for posting these images of Bakerton. My Mother grew up there and we would take the 7 hour trip there from Northern New Jersey twice a year to see my grandmother, till she passed some years ago. It's been quite some time since I've been there and seeing all of your great photography has brought back some cherished memories of those road trips. Keep up the great work.

My father's parents lived in Bakerton. My grandfather worked all his life in those coal mines. My father and his brothers worked there also in their younger years, until they moved away. In fact, my uncle almost died once in a coal mine cave-in, although, I'm not sure which mine he worked in at that time, as I was very young. We spent almost every weekend, when my grandparents were alive, driving there to visit them when I was child. Your photos bring back very fond memories of childhood and family there and I will always consider Bakerton as my family home and heritage, although, I personally have never lived there. There are 43 known family members buried in the Bakerton Methodist Cemetery. I hope to visit again soon.
